Beat the winter building blues with ST Mineral K Render from Alumasc Facades

We can rely on the constant unpredictability of the British weather, yet every winter seems to descend on the construction industry with an element of surprise. Year after year, as untimely conditions put pressure on build projects, we continue to endure missed deadlines and increased costs. But this has been addressed by Alumasc Facades, who have manufactured the perfect solution, allowing work to continue during low temperature conditions.

Alumasc’s ST Mineral K Render offers far quicker setting times than silicone render during winter months, giving installers greater flexibility to apply the product in extended periods of bad weather.

It is touch dry in just a few hours.

Suitable for use across all Alumasc External Wall Insulation Systems and also for direct application onto solid walls, ST Mineral K Render is lightweight, yet highly impact and weather resistant, whilst also remaining vapour permeable.

The product can be left with its original white finish without the need to paint, or alternatively can be overpainted with Alumasc’s Silicone Facades Paint which opens up a contemporary, wide-ranging colour palette.

screen-shot-2016-11-18-at-14-00-22Ideal for both newbuild and remodelling applications, it provides a breathable, flexible, weather-tight decorative finish to any building.

Alumasc’s ST Mineral K Render is eco-friendly, manufactured using only natural materials (mineral aggregates, and white marble grain) and is available with a rolled texture in 2, 3 and 4mm grain sizes, boasting Class 0 surface spread of flame.

The product is manufactured under ISO 9001: 2008 and ISO 14001: 2004 Quality and Environmental Management systems and is fully BBA approved.

Award Winning Home calls on Alumasc Render Systems

bankhall_pr2An award winning Cheshire property has been refurbished using Render Systems from Alumasc. Owned by David and Margie Edwards, the magnificent Bankhall House was originally completed in 2008, to a traditional Georgian/Queen Ann architectural design, earning them the prestigious title of Daily Telegraph Best Traditional House in the UK for 2010.

Following some initial problems with the original render system, David Edwards embarked on a 4-month study of the render market, in search of a system that would complement and protect his beloved Bankhall.

Following rigorous research into suitable products and approved contractors, David, brought in Alumasc Registered Installer Bruce Day of Cheshire Facades, who, according to David, “worked alongside Alumasc’s technical team to show passion above and beyond that of their competitors”.

bankhall_prpicDavid, Bruce, and the installation team, worked closely together in the investigation and resolution of the initial render problems, and specified Alumasc’s MR Polymer Render System with a decorative Silicone Render finish, as the solution.

Bruce Day has a well-established relationship with Alumasc and was confident that their products presented the right solution for Bankhall House. He comments:

“The traditional architecture at Bankhall presented a number of challenges with regard to application of the chosen render system. Intricacies in the stonework of the main house and also balustrades and plinths in the garden, demanded a robust system that could be easily applied. I have always found Alumasc systems easy to work with and in this case they also provided a perfect ‘cream’ colour match to the existing finish.”

David and Margie are thrillebankhall_pr3d with both the installation process and the result. David comments:

“Activity on site was reviewed daily by Cheshire Facades, and snagging was an integral part of my relationship with Bruce and his installers. Bruce insisted, “Our work must satisfy the customer – always”. I was also aware that render products have developed technically since the original installation, and Alumasc were able to offer all of the “cutting edge technology” required to give us the result we wanted. We feel like we’ve been given a new house.”

Alumasc Polymer and Silicone Render Systems are BBA Approved and fully warrantied. They are less susceptible to cracking and crazing than traditional plain render and are fully weather resistant whilst remaining vapour permeable.

Stanton residents living in comfort thanks to Swistherm

Swistherm from Alumasc, has been installed on 25 park homes in Suffolk, in a bid to help tackle fuel poverty amongst the elderly residents.

parkhome1West Suffolk Council partnered with Alumasc’s Registered Installer Cornerstone Limited, to carry out the installation and improve the thermal efficiency of the homes at Shepherd’s Grove Park in Stanton, which were suffering from poorly insulated walls.

Cornerstone carried out all necessary adaptions and remedial works to prepare the properties for the insulation, given that these comprised a number of different park homes styles in various states of repair.

parkhome2Before the works began, initial pull-out tests were completed to determine the mechanical fixings and fixing patterns required. Alumasc’s Swistherm EWI system was then installed with premium grade EPS insulation and finished in Alumasc’s 1.5mm decorative silicone render, with the homeowners being given a choice of colours.

The new system has significantly improved the previously poorly insulated walls,  achieving a U-Value of 0.29 W/2mk, with the insulation also securing a 25 year insurance backed warranty. In addition, the decorative render coat has rejuvenated the properties, improving the overall aesthetics of the scheme.

parkhome3Cornerstone reports that homeowners are now benefitting from warmer and more thermally efficient properties, which has in turn significantly reduced their energy bills. The feedback from homeowners has been wholly positive, with numerous reports of greatly improved warmth and comfort.

Alumasc revives Brandon House

A Bristol social housing scheme is benefitting from an extensive £5million refurbishment, which saw Swisslab and Swistherm from Alumasc as the chosen EWI systems.

brandon_completed 2Built in the 1960’s of concrete panel construction, Brandon House was experiencing problems with structural movement which had caused a catalogue of building defects. In addition, the scheme also suffered from poor insulation leading to condensation, mould and water ingress.

Bristol Council commissioned a programme of works, which included the installation of Alumasc’s Swisslab and Swistherm External Wall Insulation to around 90 flats within the block.

brandon_completedAlumasc’s Registered Installer Rateavon, installed the systems with 60mm phenolic and 110mm EPS insulation, to address the previous issues, improving thermal efficiency, reducing heating bills and extending the life of the building. The systems were specified partly due to the fact that the 60mm phenolic insulation would not encroach on the limited space down a number of narrow walkways – and in addition Rateavon have a long track record of working with Alumasc products, and their installation skill was required around a number of intricate concrete columns.

Swisslab is Alumasc’s market leading EWI system used for overcladding exisiting properties, whilst Swistherm eradicates cold bridging, condensation and mould growth. Both systems are BBA Approved, offering an effective life of over 30 years.

The systems were finished using Alumasc’s silicone render with matching clay and acrylic brick slips, in order to comply with planning requirements.

The invisible brilliance of Art Brick from Alumasc

As EWI products constantly evolve, manufacturers are under constant pressure to present the industry with new and innovative ideas.

Blog1_ArtbrickAlumasc already have an impressive portfolio of products, designed to improve the thermal efficiency and aesthetic appearance of virtually all types of construction, whether new build, refurbishment, or non-traditional. But when properties are built or refurbished amongst existing properties, the need for them to blend seamlessly into their surroundings, can sometimes be restricted, if available renders don’t quite match the existing finish.

To address this need, Alumasc’s Registered Contractor Westdale Services Ltd have taken Alumasc’s Rendabrick to the next level.

Introducing Art Brick

Westdale Services have developed Art Brick – an advanced brick effect render that can be tinted, textured and coloured to match into any surrounding brick, allowing a limitless aesthetic choice.

Blog3_Before_AfterHaving worked with Alumasc products successfully on numerous projects, Westdale Services started development of the new Art Brick render system in order to increase the options available to both newbuild and refurbishment projects that might otherwise have encountered planning issues.

With more properties being built on small plots of land in between existing properties, the need to blend with the surroundings has become more widespread, and Westdale felt there was a requirement for a finish that offered increased depth of colour and additional textures.

Suitable for both newbuild and refurbishment, Art Brick can provide any colour and texture, with long-term durability and protection from efflorescence. The result is a cost effective brick façade solution that can be installed without the requirement for pre-made brick slips or corner brick slips.

blog2_passagewayIt is suitable for installation onto any EWI system, including the exclusive Alumasc Ventilated System (AVS). When used with AVS, Art Brick provides a decorative rainscreen solution for timber frame and steel frame construction, offering specifiers, homeowners and housebuilders the widest and most cost effective choice of external wall solutions on the market.

Success for ATBS and Alumasc at the Home Building and Renovating Show

The National Homebuilding and Renovating Show is the UK’s largest self-build and renovation event – which is why it provided the perfect showcase for a new collaboration between two industry innovators.

Advanced Thermal Build Solutions (ATBS) is a design and build company, that utilises both the revolutionary Insulated Concrete Formwork system Sunbloc and the flooring system V-Tec.

Sunbloc is the latest and most advanced system of its kind and the only ICF system to be designed and manufactured in the UK. It suits any application from simple extensions through to commercial builds up to five stories. Sunbloc provides an economic and environmentally friendly method of wall construction with optimum insulation for living accommodation. The system is of modular size, lightweight and robust, and is set out on site, then pump filled with concrete. The completed Sunbloc wall can then be finished using a simple render or traditional facings such as brick, tiles, brick slips or weather boarding. To compliment Sunbloc walls, the V-Tec flooring system has been designed to provide a clear span, reinforced and insulated concrete floor.

UnknownHaving used Alumasc Renders successfully on previous projects, an installer at ATBS suggested that their facade systems might be suitable for use with Sunbloc. Discussions followed and Alumasc were invited to join ATBS on their stand at the Homebuilding and Renovating Show at the NEC in Birmingham in April. In combination they provided a rapid build system, enabling a basement plus 2 storey extension to a Nisa store, to be completed within 7 days, followed by an application of Alumasc’s Silkolitt silicone render – much to the proprietor’s delight.

Managing Director of ATBS, Hallam Funke explains: “In addition to a number of other finishes we use with Sunbloc, Alumasc’s Silkolitt Silicone Render and Acrylic Brick Slips work seamlessly with our systems and have already produced impressive results on 3 of our projects.

“Alumasc’s Area Sales Manager Nigel Walters certainly went the extra mile in spending a whole day on our stand, helping our many visitors with their facade-related questions”.

He adds: “At ATBS we like to build strategic partnerships with key industry colleagues and very much look forward to future collaborations with Alumasc.”

BlogPic1Nigel Walters of Alumasc concludes: “The new products from ATBS are exciting and innovative and sit perfectly within the Alumasc sustainability ethos. It was a pleasure
spending time with them at the show, which will hopefully lead to a number of joint opportunities in the not-too-distant future.”

Alumasc’s thin-coat ST Silkolitt silicone renders are used to create a contemporary finish in both new-build and re-modelling applications. They are highly water-repellent, vapour permeable, weather resistant and available in a range of colours.

The Alumasc Acrylic Brick Slip system offers an easy to apply, lightweight, high performance realistic brick finish, where the use of real bricks would not be viable.

Alumasc deliver thermal success in Goole

The Kingsway refurbishment project in the Goole area of Yorkshire comprises a selection of social housing properties, owned and maintained by East Riding of Yorkshire Council.

Goole102 properties were selected by the Council for exterior refurbishment, to improve thermal performance and to visually regenerate the area and maximise the lifespan of the properties.

Alumasc’s Swisslab EWI system was specified for all property elevations, using 120mm Kooltherm phenolic insulation. This decision was based on the Council’s successful use of Swisslab on previous schemes and the ongoing technical support provided by Alumasc to meet the challenges of the project.

The ambitious energy efficiency improvements required, could only be achieved by using 120mm Kooltherm phenolic board. Other insulation options available for use with Swisslab would have been too thick. With the specification of this system, East Riding of Yorkshire Council has far exceeded the requirements of most local authorities, leading to ‘U’ values of around 0.15W/m2K – far lower than most results achieved using other insulation thicknesses.

The properties were a complex mix of ages, styles and sizes, including detached properties c1800, terraced homes c1900 and semi-detached houses constructed in the 1950s. The period properties presented the challenge of maintaining their features and character and some of the homes had been subject to multiple extensions over the years, meaning significant works were needed to ensure a fluid and seamless finish.

Goole3_Before&AfterA combination of Alumasc’s brick-effect render (M.R. Rendabrick) and Silkolitt silicone render was determined by the surrounding properties to ensure those being refurbished blended in.

Considerable attention was required at one particular property where differing land levels meant side streets sloped down past the house. Alumasc worked closely with Westdale to find a solution which involved a combination of Swisslab being installed to pavement level and Alumasc’s M.R. S2 used below the damp proof course level to avoid bridging the property’s dpc with a non-porous material.

Swisslab EWI restores period features to 1920’s homes

Alumasc’s Swisslab External Wall Insulation (EWI) system has been used to transform 65 residential properties in Hertfordshire, improving thermal performance and refreshing the external facades to recreate the 1920’s period features.

North Herts Homes required a solution that would make the properties more energy efficient whilst also restoring them to their former glory.

herts1Following a consultation from Alumasc’s design team, Swisslab was used with phenolic insulation and finished in Silkolitt silicone render with a heavy textured 3.5mm drain top coat to get a close match to the original “slop dash render”. Acrylic brick slips and solar reflective X black paint were then used to create the finishing brick and mock-timber details.

In addition to the improved aesthetics, the combination of systems will make the properties warmer and will soon start to impact on the residents’ energy bills.

North Herts Homes are delighted with the results and one family commented:

“The refurbishment has given us renewed pride in our home – it’s almost like having a new house!”

herts2Swisslab is the market leading insulated render system for overcladding existing properties and is used extensively to transform homes into warmer, more attractive places to live. It is an efficient and cost effective way of improving thermal standards and allows for minimal disruption to residents during application.

Alumasc’s full range of EWI systems are BBA Approved, fully warranted and are available with a range of design and specification options, across many building types.
